Wordsworth, Pg 72

Wordsworth describes nature in his poem as being wonderful and prefect. "Every flower enjoys the air it breathes," he tells us. Even though nature is perfect, however, it does not bring him happiness. Contrasting nature's beauty to what "man has made of man" brings Wordsworth sadness. These contrasting things (nature and man) are probably responsible for the emotions he refers to when he states that "pleasant thoughts bring sad thoughts to the mind." By realizing how inferior and unhappy man is compared to the rest of nature his mood turns from 'pleasant' to 'sad'. Wordsworth therefore laments and grieves"what man has made of man".
